Capture People

shane and amy

if you've visted my website, i'm sure you've noticed that i enjoy taking pictures of people. the people section of my site is my favorite and i occasionaly lurk it myself. there is just something about catching someone's personality in frame and exaggerating it with light.

i recently had the opportunity to take some pictures of some great friends of mine Shane and Amy. i've known them for a long time. both are super talented musicians , write some amazing music together and have great senses of humor. creep their current project > www.myspace.com/kalispellmusic

we met up at an 'art night' at their church and when i saw the vintage couch i had to use it. the light setup was simple. 1 alien bee b800 into a large softbox about 4ft directly above them. nothing special. i've found that i enjoy one light shots a lot lately. i positioned the light so that it would reflect on the wall right behind their heads. i think this really helped seperate them and pull your eyes right to their faces. i love the how the reflection bounced a bit and lit up the back of shanes head as well as how the original light source put a natural rim on shanes shoulder back without the use of more lights. i feel like everything from the simplicity of the hardwood floor to the completely underexposed walls and surroundings makes SHAMY (thats what we call them) pop out of the image despite the fact that i didn't capture much detail of the subjects themselves.
if there is one thing i can say about shane and amy... it's that they are in love and thoroughly enjoy life, no matter what bad things come their way. they've had eachother... and that's enough. i feel you can see that in this image and it's definitely a favorite of mine.

i hope you enjoyed this image and entry. feel free to hit me up with any questions about gear / etc. if you're finding that you're not happy with the stuff you're shooting and can't find your niche... call up some friends and just capture people, i think you'll find that there really isn't a more interesting or fun subject to catch in your frame.
